Thunguri means “a hill” in Kikuyu language. Thunguri Coffee, home of the Specialty coffee, is produced by 1,057 small-scale coffee farmers (with approximately 634.2 ha of land under coffee culivation), living in the heart of the hilly parts of Mukurwe-ini Valleys IBA (Important Bird Area), which extends on the lower south-east slopes of the Aberdare Mountains (IBA KE 001) and to the far south west of Mount Kenya forest (IBA KE 002) in Nyeri County.
